Keep looking for new, better & even basic services

My son’s recent completion of his sophomore year of high school, drivers license test, and my soon to be skyrocketing insurance bills has our family thinking about how he can start making some money and contributing to his spending habits. He’s not quite ready for a “real” job yet, especially with various running camps and vacations planned this summer, but he is ready for the neighborhood lawn moving, power washing, mail pick-up kinds of things.

Besides the commiserating with many of you that have teenage children, where am I going with this? As I helped him distribute flyers around the neighborhood outlining his services, I thought about the basics of marketing and running a business. How doing even the most simple of activities makes you think about what other things you could be doing. This is the essence of running a business, growing revenues and learning how to be more profitable, all of course while servicing your customers with the basics and beyond.

As the new executive director of NASBA – The Association of Channel Resellers (www.nasba.com), I’ve been spending a lot of time pulling together some of the “basics” of reseller services that can help companies make money, save money, or be better prepared and trained for life in today’s technology channel. The over a dozen new services and tools for you include telecom services with a recurring revenue stream, discounts at distribution, channel development courses, monthly sales training calls that are free, health and company insurance programs, marketing toolkits, travel services and more. You can find out more about them all at www.nasba.com/members.

Now back to the flyers around the neighborhood… remember, some of the most basic activities for a business can’t be forgotten, and neither can the continual search for new services to utilize or add into your mix of services. Too often over the years, resellers have come across great programs or services they know they should integrate or start offering, but the day-to-day reality smacks them in the face and they don’t move on it due to lack of time or forgetfulness.

My son needs to continue building awareness around the neighborhood, but he also needs to be prepared, have other services available that his future customers might not know about or know he can help them with, and continue to find ways to find new revenue streams. Sound familiar?
