A recent survey by CA Technologies shows that businesses are losing billions of dollars through IT downtime and a poor disaster recovery planning. For SMBs, it’s even more difficult to recuperate after a loss, so IT service providers have a major opportunity here to offer disaster recovery services and business continuity services.
The survey found that:
- North American businesses are collectively losing $26.5 billion in revenue each year through IT downtime and data recovery. The average annual loss for an SMB is $55,000.
- The average SMB suffers 10 hours of downtime per year.
- During these periods, when business critical systems are interrupted, the average SMB’s ability to generate revenue is reduced by 29 percent.
- Post IT downtime (i.e. when IT systems are up and running), there’s an additional delay of 7.5 hours per year at each firm during which time data is still being recovered.
- In this post-outage period when data is being recovered, company revenue generation is still severely hampered, down by an average of 17 percent.
- More than 50 percent of respondents did not have confidence in their disaster recovery plan.
“The ROI is much higher than people realize,” says Steve Fairbanks, VP of product management for data management business at CA technologies. “There is a major opportunity for service providers to present these numbers to their customers to show what is occurring out there.”
The lost revenue numbers are significant, and your customers will likely be shocked. Once they are on board with developing a DR strategy, use the resources below to help devise a plan that fits your clients’ disaster recovery and business continuity plans.
