The Unitrends Enterprise Backup Free Edition enables SMBs to overcome restrictions on VMware’s vStorage APIs for Data Protection.

Archiving and data recovery solutions provider Unitrends has announced the availability of its Unitrends Enterprise Backup Free Edition for the unlicensed (free) version of VMware vSphere Hypervisor. With this addition to its product portfolio, Unitrends offers a free, automated, fully functioning backup and recovery solution for both the licensed and unlicensed versions of VMware vSphere Hypervisor.
Enterprise Backup is Unitrend’s software-only backup and recovery virtual appliance. It has supported VMware vSphere since its launch in June 2012. Now, the solution offers free backup and recovery functionality for the unlicensed version of VMware vSphere Hypervisor.
“While virtualization-focused backup vendors have struggled with the licensing restrictions on VMware’s vStorage APIs for Data Protection [VADP], Unitrends is able to provide support for the unlicensed version of VMware vSphere Hypervisor as a result of its Unified Data Protection architecture,” states Unitrends in a press release submitted to ChannelPro-SMB. “This scalable architecture provides unified host- and guest-level data protection for both virtual and physical environments.”
“SMBs can now benefit from enterprise-class data protection for the free version of VMware vSphere Hypervisor at no cost to them whatsoever,” adds Unitrends’ Maria Pressley. “As the hypervisor battle heats up, this functionality enables VMware to go head-to-head with Microsoft in the SMB market.”
Unitrends will debut its Enterprise Backup Free Edition for the unlicensed version of VMware vSphere Hypervisor at VMworld 2013 San Francisco, taking place now through August 29.
