Data storage provider Drobo has announced the general availability of its new Automated Data-Aware Tiering technology. The innovation combines Drobo’s interface and automation features with the power of solid state drives (SSDs) and data tiering in order to enable SMBs to optimize application performance.
With the Automated Data-Aware Tiering technology, SMBs will be able to dynamically manage application performance in real time. Furthermore, they will be able to do so without the need for the extensive technical expertise or budgeting generally associated with high-end data tiering.
In a press release submitted to Channel Pro-SMB, Drobo says the new advance enables SSDs to “co-exist with hard drives in a single system.” He adds that this enables SMB customers to “enjoy a single pool of automated storage that has both capacity (from hard drives) and performance (from solid state drives).”
Drobo’s Automated Data-Aware Tiering provides automatic performance acceleration and optimization across such business applications as VMware, Microsoft Exchange, SQL, SharePoint, Hyper-V, and others. It does so without the need to configure SSDs, tune applications, or manage dedicated storage.
The new technology is fully automated, requiring no configuration. SMBs simply insert two or three SSDs into the B1200i. Once the SSDs are inserted into a Drobo B1200i, performance acceleration happens automatically within minutes.
Drobo’s data tiering is data-aware and application-independent, dynamically adapting to changes in application sets and workloads. As applications or patterns change, Drobo’s data tiering adjusts accordingly to optimize performance without manual intervention.
Drobo offers Automated Data-Aware Tiering on the B1200i system that includes 18 TB of hard drives and 600 GB of SSD storage for a $17,999 MSRP.
