Every January, attendees and exhibitors head in droves to the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, irritatingly scheduled immediately after the holidays. And, like every year, it’s a spectacle beyond words. Although the value of CES—since it has grown to the point of implosion—is questionable to anyone other than merchants on the Las Vegas strip, that doesn’t seem to stop people from going and companies from exhibiting (other than Microsoft, Apple, and Google, of course). According to the Consumer Electronics Association, CES 2013 brought more than 3,250 exhibitors and 150,000-plus attendees—both record numbers.
One thing CES is good for, at a high level, is to give a sense of where the technology industry is headed, how products and services are changing, and whether or not you are prepared for the future. As the consumerization of IT marches forward, SMB resellers would be well served by keeping an eye on trends coming out of the show.
The general consensus is that 2013 will be another year of technology evolution, but there are a few areas on which electronics makers are clearly focused—and many of these will be of great importance to the SMB channel in the coming years.
